Schuberth SR2 Lightning Helmet

Schuberth SR2 Lightning Helmet Review

From first looks, the SR2 may not be what you call packed with futuristic ridges, serrations and louvres, but it has enough shape to make it stand out in the competition.

The one thing you’ll find unique about Schuberth helmets, is that almost all the helmets designed for racing or high speed have a nifty spoiler at back. The stylish looking spoilers actually have a function, and that is to reduce the lift and increase ‘downforce,’ a word that you can identify immediately if you are a tuner car-freak. Check price here.

The racing helmets from Schuberth have to tolerate the worst when it comes to wind tunnel testing and the SR 2 has certainly served its time, so to say, to bring you stability and no buffeting at those faster than real speeds.

What Would You Love?

The attention to aerodynamics in the design of this helmet is the thing you should be getting high about, because Schuberth is touting an elimination of the upward lift at high speeds. A direct upgrade from the SR1, this helmet has been made more user-friendly. The dual vents at the top give the helmet a definite, but very subtle Hellboy thing going on about them.

Schuberth has even managed to shave off a considerable amount of weight in this iteration as compared to the SR1, which is always good news when you are looking at weight loss for the sake of speed and acceleration.

They have extended their proprietary manufacturing system to all new helmets, including the SR2. This gives the SR2 an immense advantage in terms of sturdiness and uniform density.

And at 88 dB(A) near 70-80 mph, this is as quiet as it is going to get on a track day with engines screaming and roaring around you.

Top Features to Look Out For

The SR2 looks enticing enough to go for the first opportunity, so let’s see what makes it so special.

Shell

With a fiber glass construction and proprietary manufacturing system, Schuberth has managed to bring down the weight of the SR series helmet to a mere 2.9 pounds!

The fitting of the helmet is an intermediate to long oval in keeping with the streamline shape needed for racing. So people with a little wider head need to get a larger size that comes immediately next to the size that would fit you most snugly.

The adjustable spoiler is no longer present and there is now a change in the winglets to get more of that streamlining thing going on. So instead of the extractor vents that are unique to the SR1, there are diffusers that will break up the airflow around the sides of the helmet to keep the stability up.

Visors

A PinLock MaxVision face shield is included in this helmet as is now standard with most Schuberth helmets. This one has an especially expanded view to help your reflexes work quicker. Characterized by the usual dual lens, scratch proof, fog free visor, it actually makes use of hermetic sealing to accomplish the elimination of fogging on the inside. If there is no air, there is no moisture, and consequently, no mist or fog. Simple.

The face shield has been classified as Class 1 Optics so it is ‘optically correct’, i.e. 2D.

The opening and closing mechanism of the face shield could have used more thought because it features a push-release mechanism. So it actually makes it harder to remove but easier to install back on. They mention this as a quick release system, but it is really not.

Ventilation

The ventilation scheme has been changed to be in tune with the aerodynamic changes and noise reduction at the top.
To start with, the top vents are very different in design over the ones in SR1. The meshed inlet is gone and instead you have a more aggressive inlet with 10 mm holes to let extra air in. These are connected to the passive exhausts just below the spoiler which creates a vacuum under itself – great for sucking out that hot air circulating in the lid.

The large chin vent at the front for your primary airflow inlet and a visor vent above the main one for additional air flow over the inner side of the face shield and up to the top of your head. A breath guard has been provided that takes care of deflecting your exhaled air properly.

Padding and Lining

The SR2 is a lot easier to put on than SR1 now. Schuberth has decreased the thickness of the neck roll and the associated liner so it can be put on comfortably at the expense of sealing the jawline and reduced noise.

The CoolMax interior takes care of your comfort with an antibacterial wicking fabric. Unfortunately, you can not remove the cheek pads in case of emergencies, but you do have an anti-roll off factor at the back of your head.

Customer Reviews

Customers are happy about this helmet even though it has some annoyance factors. The primary reasons why customers love this helmet is because it is extremely light and sturdy with an enhanced vision and superior airflow for maximum enjoyment on the track.

Bottom Line

The king of all racing helmets? Not quite. But the Schuberth SR2 ‘Lightning’ helmet is certainly up there when it comes to German Engineering – aesthetics and performance guaranteed.
