Caberg Tourmax White

Boasting to be the first flip-up helmet made for Enduro and Maxi Enduro motorcycle owners, this offering from Caberg is a solid dual sport lid that is worthy of your attention.

It is dual homologated, which makes it legal to ride with the chin guard in the open as well as the closed position. With the ECE 22.05 rating and a 5/5 SHARP crash test score, you are looking at one of the most feature-rich, yet safe helmets to wear in the European region and the UK.

What Would You Love?

Caberg Tourmax has a unique system for their visor – chin guard – peak arrangement. They call it the Double Visor Tech System. The peak automatically adjusts itself in a raised position and the snap in default position as the chin guard is opened and closed respectively. Very cool.

The metallic white appearance has an aura of class around it, and has enough things in black around the helmet to keep up the contrast.

The Tourmax helmet has a concave design at the ears from the inner side which makes wearing spectacles or goggles a breeze.

Caberg has also made sure that their Just Speak com unit can be easily fit in recesses already in the helmet.

The Top Features to Look Out For

Some folks are skeptical about flip-face helmets thinking about the things that can go wrong, with so many features working at once. Are they right in thinking that? Let us see.

Shell

The first thing you will feel when you put this lid on is the weight. Dual sport helmets are usually found on the heavier side of things. And so is the Caberg Tourmax weighing in at 1775 grams or 3.91 pounds. It could have easily crossed the 4-pound mark with the visor and added peak, but Caberg has been successful in keeping the weight down by just a tad.

The shape of the helmet is rounded oval, which should fit a lot of customers just fine. People with heads on the wider side have nothing to worry about, since this helmet does not create pressure points near your temple area.

With a single shell size, the Tourmax comes in at an XS size with 53-54 cm all the way up to an XL size or 61-62 cm.

The overall look of the helmet is modern – futuristic with ridge lines converging at the back to justify an angular fit in the normal position. The flipped up stance nicely aligns the chin guard ridge on the side with the brow shape to give you that refined style while riding on your favorite BMW.

Visors

Caberg has made sure that the visor provided is anti-scratch and included a Pinlock anti-fog lens in the stock box. An integrated, drop down sun visor slides smoothly, operated with a lever at the top. You might feel that a little force is needed to open or close it, but the resistance is by design, which keeps the visor in the desired positions.

The overall view is a bit narrow for comfort as compared to other helmets in the same category, so you may need to move that neck around a little to get a better view of the surroundings.

Ventilation

Caberg has kept things simple and offered just two inlet vents for airflow. The always open chin vent and a large top vent at the center can be toggled on or off with a slider. Caberg has noted the difficulty in operating levers with gloves on and adjusted the shape of the lever accordingly.

The airflow is maintained with channels in the EPS. It has large vent holes placed evenly to get that air blown over your top to keep it cool.

The always open chin vent might bother some riders. But if you have a Balaklava on, you will not feel much difference in colder weather.

Padding and Lining

Many riders are inevitably going to use this helmet for extended periods of time, so Caberg has incorporated a hypoallergenic liner. The cheek pads are fitted on top of a neck collar to seal in air and noise with the chin guard in the down position.

The comfort liner also comes out quite easily revealing the large air vents holes and the air channels in the EPS.

Customer Reviews

Although the helmet does not present much in the form of design problems, some users faced an issue which is popularly known as the ‘Fish Lip’ syndrome. The chin guard fits a little too close to the chin; so much so that the entire chin area and the mouth rest against the inside. Those with a jaw structure indicating an overbite are in for some trouble with fitting.

Some riders also had a problem with the narrow field of view in the lateral as well as horizontal direction.

Some customers reported that the peak also reduces buffeting at higher speeds, but has a tendency to obstruct some side winds.

Bottom Line

If Caberg can take care of the chin guard problem by making a larger shell size and a few more EPS sizes available, this whole fish lip syndrome will be taken care of.

The Caberg Tourmax is as good a flip face helmet as any and can be considered worth buying for tours. But only after you have found the perfect fit.
